What is a compass? Why was it important to ancient Chinese sea travel?

A compass is a navigational device known to tell the directions of N (north), E (east) , S (south), and  W (west).  Magnetized power is used to control the compass.  The magnetized power comes from earths magnetic field.  The compass was invented in ancient China in 247 B.C.  Its important  for Chinese sea travel because it gave them direction so they knew what way they needed to travel.

Who is Marco Polo? Why is he important?

Marco Polo was the most famous explorer in the middle ages. When he returned home from traveling he was 41. he was famous for traveling around the whole world! He traveled through china to. He was important to Chinese sea travel because he was the first on to travel around the whole world! I would think it would be hard and stressful to travel the whole world. But i would feel great after i finished.

What were there boats like?

The boat they were most on was called the junk ship. It is known to be the most ugly and awkward boat ever. Junk ship had a flat bottom, a high stern, and a low front. The boat was a very strong boat, almost the most strong boat ever designed. They used the boat for fishing, transportation, trading, and warfare.

Where do they travel, and why?

They travel to a lot of different sea as in the Yellow sea, Kara sea, Laptev sea, South China sea, East China sea, Red sea, and the Mediterranean sea. These are not the only seas that they traveled to though, there are many more. They mostly traveled in places around the Indian ocean. The Indian ocean is a very big ocean so they must have traveled to a lot of places. I would love to travel if it did not take so long as it was for them.

what is chinese sea travel?

Ancient Chinese sea travel is traveling by boat to different seas and oceans. They traveled on a lot of boats but mostly on a boat called the junk ship. They sailed mostly around the Indian ocean since the 2nd century B.C. Its took day, to months, to years for them to travel to different places. They always had to use a compass to tell them what direction they were going. I think that would be a really long, and hard time to be on a boat, I'm glad that we now have planes, cars, and bigger and better boats to travel around in.
